The Monday Night Cure – Spoken Word in Derry

The Monday Night Cure, the new event for spoken word and verbal arts in general in Derry has now been going for three months and is a great success. For that I am delighted, and want to extend great thanks and sloppy hugs to the regular group of performers and audience which are building up. The MNC gigs have so far been diverse, informal and great craic and we have seen several writers brand new to reading/performing in public take to the mic as well as the more seasoned artistes. Performers have included poets, theatre practitioners, novelists, rappers, storytellers and so on.

If you’d like a taste of what The Cure is about, just follow the Youtube link for our playlist: This month the MNC are excited to be hosting Australian performance artist/poet and singer Candy Royalle, as part of her Butch Priestess tour.

“Candy Royalle has performed alongside many of the greats including Ursula Rucker (who said “Candy Royalle is all at once fragile, powerful, raw, sensitive, beautiful, unflinching and honest. She, her spirit and her work, will change you”) Shane Koyczan, Sarah Kay, Phil Kay, Rives, Anis Mojgani and Holly McNish to name a few. A festival curator once described Royalle as “an act you remember for years” and the Austin International Poetry Festival Chair stated Candy had “…changed the face of poetry in Austin, forever”. Few who see her can forget her intensity, her combustible blend of intellect, imagination and heart.”

Candy will be performing a 45min set at Sandino’s Bar (home of The Cure), Water St- Derry, on Monday 8th June at 9pm, damage will be a mere FIVER sterling – a bargain no matter what way you look at it.
Support will be provided by Maximum Homosapien (poet, playwright -Donegal) Gemma Walker (writer, actress – Derry) and Abby Oliveira (performance poet – Derry).

Workshop: The following evening, Tues 9th June, Candy will be facilitating a writing workshop titled ‘Write, Breathe, Perform’ – the workshop will take place at The Playhouse theatre, Artillery St – Derry, from 6-9pm and is being hosted in association with Sole Purpose productions theatre co. The workshop will suit those interested in exploring how we tell our stories, and the cost will be £10 payable on the night. In order to register for the workshop please email abbyospokenword@gmail.com.
