WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO INCREASE EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY IN THE IRISH ARTS?, BY TINA PISCO

Gender imbalance sucks. Gender imbalance in the Arts super-sucks. Gender imbalance at the Abbey triple-whammy sucks.

One would expect all those pinko luvie theatre people to be concerned with such cutting edge issues as gender parity.

But here’s something that doesn’t suck: as far as I know the Abbey pays artists.

Because if being overlooked on the basis of your gender sucks, not getting paid when you finally get a gig is the mother of all sucky situations.

I have an idea: How about we start a campaign. We print up stickers that venues can put up on their premises that say: WE PAY OUR ACTS.

We set up an award for the venues/institutions/festivals that treat their artists best. We make up a list of those who suck (I’m looking at you Electric Picnic).

We let the punters know. We bask in the glory….

As to how to ensure that there no longer is gender imbalance in the Arts: just follow Justin Trudeau’s lead

Asked why he went for gender parity in his cabinet, Trudeau replied; “Because it’s 2015”.
It’s that easy.
